Block Watch
Let’s Jump Start Our City’s Block Watch Programs:
Are you concerned about crime in your neighborhood? Do want to help your neighborhood reduce their chances of being victimized by criminals?
Are you willing to work TOGETHER with your neighbors and police to solve problems and work jointly to enhance the quality of life?
If so, start a block watch program in your neighborhood.
While the police department administers the program and helps get it started, the program is totally dependent on neighbors to be successful. A Block Captain and Co-Captain are elected by the citizens in a neighborhood to serve as liaison with the police. This person is responsible to share crime prevention information with neighbors as it becomes available, and for inviting new neighbors into the program. While this is strictly an awareness program, as opposed to a citizen’s patrol, the people on the block become more familiar with their neighbors. Residents are trained to recognize and report suspicious activities around their own and their neighbors’ homes. Neighborhoods with active Block Watch organizations show a significant reduction in criminal activity. If you are interested in starting a block watch program in your neighborhood contact Officer Mike Fiola at 360-432-5135 or by email: mikefiola@ci.shelton.wa.us
By working TOGETHER we can make a difference, and we can reduce crime in the City of Shelton.
Car Prowl / Auto Theft
Car prowl is a theft from a vehicle and property damage that occurs while trying to gain access to a vehicle. To reduce your risk of being a victim of car prowl or theft, roll up windows, lock doors, remove keys, never leave valuables in car. What attracts a car thief? Leaving your car unlocked, windows down, leaving keys in the car, leaving valuables, no car alarms.
Citizen Academy
The Shelton Police Department offers at least one Police Citizen Academy per year. The mission of the academy is to educate and inform the community on issues relative to law enforcement, provide a forum for police-community interaction and identify community problems, needs and concerns. The 10-week academy is designed to give our citizens an overview of the department’s structure, service, and personnel. The academy classes are taught by police employees to include patrol officers and detectives. If you are interested please contact Shelton Crime Prevention Officer Patton at (360)432-5135.
Crimeweb.net
CrimeWeb is a method for law enforcement to disseminate information to the public. The service is free and allows citizens to receive information that concerns them and their community.
Personal Safety
Most crimes are crimes of opportunity. The key to staying safe from assault or robbery is to avoid places or activities that provide a criminal the opportunity to commit a crime against you. Adopt a 'security conscious' lifestyle. The best prevention is precaution. A basic rule is to stay ALERT to your surroundings. Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave!
Residential Safety
Burglary is a crime that threatens all homes, but especially those which provide criminals with the "opportunity" to intrude, steal, and escape undetected. By using safety strategies (Alarms, Lights, Dead Bolts, Pruning Back Landscape) you can minimize the burglar's opportunity.
