The first layer of asphalt has successfully been laid on Olympic Highway North. We can now confidently say that the road will reopen between 7th Street and C Street by the end of the day on Friday, April 12th, regardless of what the weather does between now and Friday.

Now that the April 12th deadline to reopen Olympic Highway North has been met, the first short-term closure of Northcliff Road between Birch and Poplar is scheduled to start on Monday, April 15th and will last through Friday, April 19th, including nights. Olympic Highway North will be used as the primary detour route. City crews will be installing a series of stormwater upgrades to alleviate harmful runoff issues that have caused damage to the roadway. This will include new storm drains and drain lines that cross Northcliff Road in multiple locations. We are doing this work now prior to paving Northcliff Road between 1st Street and Poplar later on as part of the Basin 3 Sewer Rehabilitation Project.

As mentioned, the extended multi-week closure of Northcliff Road that was scheduled from mid-April through mid-May is no longer necessary due to adjustments made to the Downtown Connector Project work plan by City staff. We are committed to doing everything we can to minimize impacts on traffic and local businesses during construction.

The 1st & Alder intersection will be closed between Pine Street and Birch Street starting on Monday, April 15th through the end of July.

We appreciate your continued patience as we work to improve the City’s infrastructure. For your safety, please stay alert, watch for lane/channelization changes, and obey all construction signs and flagging personnel.

Contact the Public Works Department at 360-426-9731 or publicworks@sheltonwa.gov with questions or concerns. Office hours are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

OLYMPIC HIGHWAY NORTH
Olympic Highway North will reopen by end of day on Friday, April 12th.

During the remainder of the closure, crews will be finishing up the new curb and sidewalks, a series of center islands, new street lighting and landscaping, a rain garden next to the library on 8th Street, and new pavement between 7th Street and C Street.

Due to roadway restrictions during construction, a temporary truck/oversized vehicle restriction will be implemented on Olympic Highway North starting 4/12/2019 through the completion of the Downtown Connector Project later this summer. All vehicles with a wheelbase greater than 40’ are prohibited on Olympic Highway North between 7th Street and C Street. An alternate truck/oversized vehicle route has been established. (See map below.) Signs will be on display marking the route. Vehicle restrictions will be enforced.
