Role of the City Commission

The City Commission is the legislative body of City government. The three Commissioners are elected every four years by popular vote of the registered voters of the City of Shelton. One commissioner is elected as the Mayor who also serves as the Commissioner of Public Safety; one commissioner is elected as the Commissioner of Finance; and one is elected as the Commissioner of Public Works and street improvements. Collectively, their role is similar to a city council in cities that have a council form of government or, in a broader sense, to the legislature at the state level.

The City Commission must determine the policies, directions and levels of service of City government. Their job is to determine how to best meet the numerous needs and demands for public services throughout the community while complying with state and federal mandates and doing all of this with limited financial resources. The City Commission must constantly listen to the people in the community while keeping an ear tuned to the events of the region, the state, the nation, and the world, which could affect the City of Shelton.
