Code Enforcement

The goals and functions of the City of Shelton Code Enforcement Division are primarily focused on improving community appearance by working with citizens and property owners to improve or maintain property aesthetics and value.  This is attained through the adoption, implementation, and enforcement of minimum building and property maintenance codes.

In addition, housing and building codes outlined in the Shelton Municipal Code are enforced in order to assure minimum life safety standards in the community.  The Code zoning Specialist also fields questions, answers complaints and investigates zoning, business/illegal businesses, derelict/abandon/junk vehicles, public nuisance violations, building setbacks, fence criteria, signage, property/building abaement, and other questions regarding new construction inside the City of Shelton.

We promote the majority of these efforts through providing Property Maintenance Enforcement, Notification Letters and public education.

How do I make a complaint?
Most people want to comply with the laws of the community where they live, but some don't. Reporting violations is important to the overall quality of life in our community and it helps our city do a better job.

To expedite service and response, make sure that you have a specific address if possible before calling and any additional information that would help get the violation corrected. You do not need to give your name with a complaint. Call (360) 432-5132 to discuss the possible violation.

What if I see someone illegally dumping junk, trash or debris?
Call the police department immediately! Make sure you get a good description of the person dumping, the vehicle that they were driving, and the vehicle license number. If you see illegally dumped trash after the fact and cannot provide a description of the responsible party, it will depend on where the trash is located that will determine how it is to be removed.
If someone dumps on your property, you will ultimately be responsible for the removal of the items. If you find someone's address in the dumped trash and would like to have it investigated, call the City Police Department.
